BANGALORE: In an interesting case, theKarnataka high court has dismissed a PIL challenging the allotment of 60 acres land to Goa Minerals Pvt Ltd at Belur Industrial Area, Dharward for setting up a sponge iron and steel plant.
A division bench headed by chief justice D H Waghela also came down heavily on the practice of some advocates lending their names as litigants in PILs.
“In recent times, this Court is coming across several cases assailing policy decisions, and actions of the executives and various authorities wherein advocates as parties (litigants) attempts to espouse some assumed or alleged public interest where in fact, filing of such petitions runs contrary to public interest Mere lending of names by advocates to such litigations neither in any way enhance public interest nor give credence to their cause” the bench strongly observed while imposing a cost of Rs 40,000 upon petitioners Dharwad
